ECW Arena

So the other day, like many of us wargamers do, I was having a look through poundland for any bits useful for hobbying. I didn’t get anything personally but as usual I was with my daughter, and when I go in poundland with her I always have to buy her something, and this time she picked up some mini wrestling figures (she does like watching a bit of wrestling with me from time to time).

So we got home and she had a little play with her figures, and then she asked me if she could have a ring for them to play with. I whipped up something quick for her to play with out of some cardboard before getting dragged into a game with her myself. Anyway, long story short, not much was on TV last night and I got bored, so I improved upon her little cardboard ring, and made this!
The ropes could be done better but it is for my little one to play with, so I didn’t want to get too fiddly with it.

Entrance way

Anyway, a quick silly post today, and apologies again for my lack of posting stuff. I hope to get back into a routine with my blogging but It’s about six weeks now before I get married, so again, the real life stuffs getting in the way and all that.

The Governor

Another quick post today guys, as I thought I’d better post the follow up to the “Rick Grimes” miniature from my last post sooner rather than later, and show off his nemesis, A.K.A "The Governor”.

Once again a lovely sculpted miniature, this time from the fantastic Studio Miniatures survivor range. Listed as “The Boss” on their web store, the sculpt here seems to be based around the Governors depiction in the comic series rather than the TV show, but as I have never read the comics, I decided to paint his clothing more like that seen in the TV series.

Rick Grimes

Once again guys, sorry for my lack of posting. My blogging mojo is still suffering somewhat, as It’s been nearly a month now since my last post and I’ve still hardly done any hobbying. But no more excuses, I did promise minis last time, so here we go!

Today I’d thought I’d show off my new interpretation of “Rick Grimes” from “The Walking Dead”. He is a fairly new miniature from Hasslefree Miniatures, labelled as “Clint” on their web store. As usual with all of Hasslefree’s miniatures, the sculpting on this is once again fantastic, and thus I really enjoyed paining up this mini. I think the sculpt was intentionally based on a character from a recent survival horror video game, but when I saw it, all I could think was how it would make for a good Rick as he’s seen in the TV show.

Well that’s it for now guys; some more miniatures will be on the way soon, as I hope not to leave it so long before I post again.

Overdue update, and being Liebstered!

Due to the world cup being on, the last couple of weeks I’ve been consumed with footie fever, and thus apologies again for the lack of activity here recently on Round Dave’s. Prior to that, I haven’t really got much hobbying done at all since finishing my Salute haul off, as I’ve been very busy due to the missus and I finally deciding to set a date for our (long overdue) wedding. Were getting married at the end of November, so not long to plan really, and as you guys who have gone through the wedding process before know, the ladies go a bit crazy when they sit down and start planning for their big day!

In other news, Bob “The Dude” Kinnear from "BZA Bob's ZombieApocalypse" recently nominated me for a Liebster award. Again, thanks for the nomination Bob, it is very much appreciated.

With regards to the Libster award, I am supposed to nominate and pass it on to my favourite five blogs with 200 or less followers. Well as all of the guys I would like to have nominated; either have already been nominated by someone else, or find the whole Libster thing to be an annoying chain letter, I wont bother them further, and instead just give them an honourable mention here:

  1. Nobody667 from “Game Mayem” for his Awesome ATZ batreps
  2. Joe from “Zabadak’s Zombie World” for the great inspiring terrain builds
  3. Clint from “Anything But A One” for a showing a bit of practically everthing (though I do enjoy the numerous game boards)
  4. Mathyoo from “The Necroleadicon” for various Zombie goodness and some lovely sculpting work
  5. Johnny from “Brains And Guts” also for Zombie goodness and more recently his “Across the Dead Darth” stuff
  6. Colgar6 from “Colgar6 and the Infinite Legion of Toy Soldiers” for all the various ATZ and Full Thrust stuff
Also I want to mention two blogs with over 200 followers who I believe deserve mention.

  1. Simon from “Brummie’s Wargamming Blog” for all the Zombie, EotD, AvP and Across the Dead Earth stuff!
  2. Bryan from “Vampifan’s World of the Undead” for undoubtedly the best Zombie blog going!

Well that’s all for today guys, I plan to sit down and start taking some photos shortly, and thus get back to posting a few more miniatures soon. Also in the near future, I may plan on doing a bit of a Q&A thing that seems to be circling the blogsphere at the moment. Until next time though, as Bob and the Dude would say, “take it easy”.

Fantasy Steam Punky Bike Thing?

So recently I was going through and having a look through some of my old fantasy minis. I was just seeing what I got, where I can possibly make space to put all the new shiny things I want to get for other projects, the typical stuff we wargamers get up to when where not playing or painting when I came across this monstrosity I must have made some five or so years ago.

First thought was “what the f*@k is that?” followed by “what the f*@k was I thinking?”

Back when I made this, all I ever played were fantasy games, mainly DnD or Warhammer. I remember having a part assembled space marine bike in my bits box that my brother had bought years ago (I don’t know why as we never ever collected or played 40k) and I suppose I thought “what can I do with this?”, which I can only assume resulted in an idiotic idea to make it more “fantasy” looking!

Even though the paint job is very rough compared to what I strive for today, and the fact the model has never seen the light of day since I made it, it’s unique and quite odd, and that’s why I thought I’d take some pics (embarrassing as it is) and share it with you guys.

DVD's Workspace

I’ve been doing a lot of painting the past few days, and as I was about to pack up after a lengthy paint session last night, it occurred to me that I’ve never posted anything showing my work area. So here’s the mess that is DVD’s workspace.

I’ve been slowly working my way through my Salute haul, which I am over half way through now. All that’s left to do are a couple of plastic zeds, a small group of rednecks, the Salute freebie and a pair of walking dead characters.

So that’s what I’ll be working on for the next few days, after which I intend to start work on adding some more scatter terrain to my city (still need some inspiration on that front), and then I hope to start getting some games in finally!

DVD's Salue 2014

Quickly before I get on to my day at Salute, I’ll start off with the pic from what seems now as the annual Salute blogger meeting.

Salute 2014 loot

So I’ve just got back from Salute, and as it’s the blogs 2nd birthday, I thought I’d quickly just do a quick post before I get on with playing with my new toys just to show the loot I picked up at the show. Over the next week or so I will probably be doing another couple of posts on both my adventures at Salute, as I did get a couple of games in this time, followed probably by another post full of all the pictures I took at the show.

So other than the free Salute miniature, here’s a run down of what I came away with today. At the Hasslefree miniatures stand I picked up a sprue of four of studios plastic zeds, along with a studio limited edition metal zed. Five Hasslefee minis consisting of the new Clint survivor, Signee and Billie (for use as Ripley and Newt in my aliens games) and an old man and woman. At the Studio Miniatures stand I picked up the new “Boss” survivor (The walking dead Governor) and a pack of four metal police zombies. Then at Westwind Productions, I picked up a gang of four rednecks and another survivor type miniature, and finally at Heresy miniatures I picked up a Halfling Michael Jackson zombie and some 25mm bases.

Salute, Zombies and Milestones

Well as many of you wargamers know, tomorrow is Salute 2014. Being as I live just across the river, a couple of tube stops away, I feel it would be bad form on my part if didn’t attend the show. So as it stands, I should be there tomorrow. Other than all the games and shiny things on sale, I am really looking forward to meeting up with the bloggers again, which as I understand will be at the same time (1pm) and place as last year. Here’s a map I lifted showing the meeting point.

Now other than Salute, tomorrow also brings the second anniversary of my blog. Even though sadly my rate of posting did take a bit of a nosedive this past year for various reasons, to be two years in and still have the enthusiasm to post, largely due to the positive response from you guys, is something I’m extremely proud of. So two years in, and yet another small personal milestone, as this post is also the 50th post I’ve personally written for this blog.

Now that that’s all out the way, in light of the big show tomorrow and the blogs anniversary, I couldn’t leave you without posting at least some miniatures could I? So here’s a little teaser of my 100+ painted zombie horde.

The Ultimate Warrior 1959 – 2014

Anyone who follows pro wrestling will by now have heard of the shocking news that James Brian Hellwig (A.K.A The Ultimate Warrior) sadly passed away yesterday, just days after being inducted into the WWE hall of fame. As a childhood hero of mine, I have many fond memories watching The Ultimate Warrior wrestle, and so I thought I’d quickly post just to express how saddened and shocked I am at the news, and that my thoughts are with his family at this time.

The Ultimate Warrior made his last TV appearance this past Monday on Raw, in which he came to the ring and addressed the fans. I’d like to end this post by sharing his words from that broadcast, as in retrospect; they are a very befitting tribute to The Ultimate Warrior.

"No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own. Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life what makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them bleed deeper and something larger than life then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized. By the story tellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honour him and make the running the man did live forever. You, you, you, you, you, you are the legend makers of Ultimate Warrior. In the back I see many potential legends. Some of them with warrior spirits. And you will do the same for them. You will decide if they lived with the passion and intensity. So much so that you will tell your stories and you will make them legends, as well. I am The Ultimate Warrior. You are the Ultimate Warrior fans and the spirit of Ultimate Warrior will run forever."

Aliens - Play Test and Batrep

Recently I have been dabbling again with my Aliens project, and of late I have been toying around with some rule sets in particular. Recently I managed to get a game in, and so I thought I’d try using something loosely based around the mechanics used in GW’s space hulk, see how that plays out, and get a bit more practice with writing a batrep.

So before we begin, let’s meet the cast.

From left to right: Sgt. VanDam, Sgt. Apone, Cpl. Hicks and Pvt. Hudson.

Pvt. Vasquez, Pvt. Drake, Cpl. Dietrich, LT. Gorman and Special Agent Hunk.

Pvt. Wedge, Cpl. Biggs, Pvt. Connors, Pvt. Crowley and Pvt. Cox.

So the mission at hand is a simple rescue and evacuation. Special agent Hunk has been dispatched with a unit of colonial Marines to a secret Weyland industries research station. While there, they are to rendezvous with the company’s armed science team, and evac them to safety.

Agent Hunk: What’s the situation Corporal?
Biggs: Xeno infestation sir! The entire facility has been compromised!
Agent Hunk: And the data?
Biggs: Each one of my team carries a copy sir.
Agent Hunk: Good work Corporal. Sergeant, ready your men, were leaving!
Apone: Alright, you heard the man, asses and elbows, let’s move it people!

Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery (Review)

I’ve been meaning to do this review for quite a while now, and being as recently this game has been hitting our groups table a lot once again, I thought I’d better share my thoughts on it. As I’ve had this game for a while now, I have also acquired both the “Serpents and the Wolf” expansion set, as well as the recently released set of promo cards available from the GailForce nine web store.
My thoughts on both of those, and what they add to the base game will also be included in my ramblings.

Bub 2

Another quick post today, just to quickly show off another one of my zombies. As many of you regulars know, a little while ago I posted my version of the “Bub” zombie from George Romero’s “Day of the Dead”, which I made from one of Studio miniatures plastic zombie kits. See my post on him here
Well since then I have acquired and painted a fair few of Studios nice metal zombies, one of whom happens to be another representation of “Bub”. Being as this is a much nicer miniature than my previous “Bub”, I thought I’d quickly share it.
